Naturopathic Doctor
Christine Doherty, ND

Dr. Christine Doherty specializes in the natural medicine approach to gluten intolerance and celiac disease. Her extensive knowledge of the symptoms and treatment of celiac disease, and her own personal experience with the illness have allowed her to help thousands of people recover and lead full lives.

Dr. Doherty is a sought-after national speaker and the author of countless articles on celiac disease and gluten intolerance. She has lectured nationally to thousands of doctors and laypeople on topics related to gluten intolerance. She writes a regular column called “Super Supplements” for Living Without, a national magazine on food allergies and intolerance. One of her articles on super foods inspired an article in the Chicago Tribune in 2009.

She was interviewed by Jeffrey Bland, PhD as ‘Clinician of the month” in June 2009, for the Functional Medicine Update series. You can listen to the half hour interview below, where Dr. Doherty will tell her shocking medical history and discuss her approach to working with gluten based conditions.

Interview with Dr. Doherty

She recently co-authored (with Melinda Dennis, RD, LDN for Beth Israel Deaconess Celiac Disease Center) the chapter on supplements, in the forthcoming book “Real Life with Celiac Disease: Troubleshooting and Thriving Gluten Free” due to be published May 2010 by the American Gastroenterological Association.

She is a medical advisor to the Southern New Hampshire Gluten Intolerance Association, and to Living Without magazine. Dr. Doherty is also a celiac disease expert for Pinnacle Care, an exclusive private health advisory service that seeks out top doctors internationally for their clients. Dr. Doherty has been a licensed naturopathic doctor in New Hampshire since 1999. She is a member of the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians and the New Hampshire Association of Naturopathic Doctors. Dr. Doherty has been privileged to work with thousands of people from all over the United States and from Japan, Australia, England, Denmark, Bermuda, France, The Virgin Islands, Dubai, Canada and Nepal. She has been appointed by two New Hampshire Governors, first to the Osteoporosis Advisory Council in 2000 and again to the New Hamsphire Board of Naturopathic Examiners in 2008.

Dr. Doherty was drawn to naturopathic medicine in the early 1990’s because of her own chronic health issues. Since childhood, she had suffered from rashes, IBS, anemia, bone pain, frequent infections and bruising. Her health deteriorated and she suffered from anxiety, depression, infertility, trigeminal neuralgia,  and almost constant stomach pain. She was twice misdiagnosed with cancer and had half of her small intestine, two thirds of her colon, ten lymph nodes, her gall bladder, appendix, ilioceccal valve removed in 2001. She then went in to immune failure for two years.  Despite visits to physicians of all different specialties, no one could explain her chronic symptoms. After being in practice for five years, she discovered the source of her chronic illness: celiac disease. Once she went gluten free her health turned around and despite some level of permanent surgical malabsorption she lives a healthy, full life. She developed a line of vitamin packs specific to people who are gluten free and have nutritional deficiencies.

Christine Doherty graduated with her Doctorate of Naturopathic Medicine in 1998 from Bastyr University in Seattle, Washington. She also has a Bachelor of Science in Human Sciences from Bastyr and a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Concordia University in Montreal, Quebec.
